He works his way into the top 10 in the world, then quits to go do medical research, because that was more important to him and his family. It is a not uncommon to hear about someone who is very into chess or computer chess give it up in favor of other things (marriage, having a child, job changes, etc.). I have spent hundreds of hours on chess and chess programming, but if those things hinder my family later in life (I'm not married or anything yet), I won't hesitate to give those things up or make significant cutbacks. Sometimes those cutbacks are only temporary, like during final exam time.
