I disagree here. Do you think Gata Kamsky put significant time into playing
chess? He works his way into the top 10 in the world, then quits to go do
medical research, because that was more important to him and his family.

It is a not uncommon to hear about someone who is very into chess or computer
chess give it up in favor of other things (marriage, having a child, job
changes, etc.).

I have spent hundreds of hours on chess and chess programming, but if those
things hinder my family later in life (I'm not married or anything yet), I won't
hesitate to give those things up or make significant cutbacks. Sometimes those
cutbacks are only temporary, like during final exam time.
