Many programs have been effectively using forward prunning techniques.
I have thought of many but none are good all the time.

So, lets call a set of forward prunning techniques a strategy. We implement
several of these "strategies" in a program. Now, part of the program looks
at a position and decides which strategy to use -- this could be called
a type of planning. Of course, there would be other levels of planning too.

There, I have dreamed up something. Is it new? I have never seen it
published. Can it be implemented? That is the big question.
