Hydra is just a baby. It's easy to beat a baby. Wait until it grows up! Then
it will not be so easy to whip it.

Bob Hyatt has already explained it. Hardware beats software hands down if it is
designed properly due to the possibility of having all of the hardware optimized
for chess. A PC is general-purpose and thus far from optimized for chess.
Chess software on a general-purpose computer cannot compete with hardware
optimized for chess. Fortunately for the software guys, the threat of
obsolescence can be a problem for the hardware guys. The software guys can sit
back and watch the PC designers make improvements for them.

Hardware design and development surely must be similar to the processes of
designing and developing software. [There is a dissertation topic here.]
Development usually starts with a "breadboard" or an "engineering model." These
are far from optimized. That is what we saw at Paderborn. The fully optimized
Hydra is still in the future. The real Hydra will stand up soon enough. : )
