When I first start playing chess against my Girlfriend she was weak. I loved playing against her because she would not see my combinations of attack, and I could pretty much set up a position and not worry about the rest of the board, her vision never went further than protecting her queen (not the king, even though she knew once that was gone it was over). Well two years later and she is now my fiancee (many have wondered why :-) and after many hundreds of games, she has improved only slightly, she does see more than just the queen now, but for some reason I do not think she looks deeper than two moves ahead. Maybe three, but most of the time only one. Ususally if she see's an attack, I see it and stop it. But I do let her win when she has come across a good setup (no fun playing chess if you are always losing). So no, sometimes practice does not help if you are not willing to learn from your mistakes and some people never learn, simply because they love playing chess but do not know know how to learn from their errors. And even when they do know how to learn they simply do not. That is why she loves CM6K because the lowest rating personality and even the bottom five she can beat, which makes her smile and feel happy that she is not the worst, you can see it in her face and eyes. And because they have photo's of people faces on the personalities and a short bio of that personality, I think it makes her feel as though she is actually beating a real person who plays like that. Some people just like playing chess and I think the more they play the more they hope they will improve, so do, some do not. I think as long as my fiancee smiles when she is winning and I see the gritted teeth and frown when she is not going so well, I think that is all that is required to play chess, is to have some emotion and feeling while playing it, that is what makes it fun. I also find that women move around alot when they play and think. My lady seems more ready for a boxing match than playing chess. And most of her friends that have played me or her move around alot too. Is this the normal thing for women when playing.
