Good question. At first glance there doesnt seem to be a opteron build. However I wouldnt be suprised if there is an unofficial build, or one in the making. I'll do some more research and get back to you. Personally I've never used Windows for 64bit computing, and as for speed I know linux is blazing fast on an opteron. A friend of mine bought a Opteron laptop, and it was amazing. Believe it only took him 3 minutes to compile the linux kernel. As for bitboards, yeah it'll help, as to how much I dont have any numbers. However if you look around CCC or do a search for AMD64 and Crafty, (or opteron and crafty) I remember Dr. Hyatt giving some stats on the speed increase when going to Opteron. If it was me, I'd dual boot and test it both out and do some benchmarks. As for the OS, not sure how much the OS really effects the program. Stability might be an issue. Compiler wise, gcc is alright. And is the only other compiler besides the Windows SDK for AMD64. I'll also do some research and see what I can come up with. Side notes/commentary: Have heard that the Intel C compiler (ICC) can give you a as much as a 20% speed boast for 32bit code (windows and linux). Would be nice if they ported it to AMD64 linux as they did the 32bit version. Though I doubt it since it's a competitor. Though Intel, after Itanium, seems to be working toward AMD compatibility for once. So who knows. A compiler I've been wanting to try is OpenWatcom. Back in they day they had a great compiler and there's been a lot of hope since they decided to open source it. Yet another compiler is the IBM visual age. They are 64bit, but for PPC. Even with a 32bit G4 I noticed some decent speed boast when using it. When compiling on a G5 it's supposed to be even better. Hoped this helped a little :) Sincerely, Joshua Shriver > >Yes, the UCI & book issues are not show-stoppers. > >However, Linux seems like it could take quite some time to get familiar with. > >Is Knoppix 64 bit?
