Replacing the HH by a machine-learning technique has been done by my former colleague Levente Kocsis (see also http://www.cs.unimaas.nl/~kocsis/ ) His idea was to replace the HH by the neural movemap heuristic. You can find papers on his website. Other machine-learning techniques he applied were in the field of forward-pruning and time-allocation.
