Subject: Tinker 64 Bit Speedup (Early Results)

Well, I finally got the Microsoft compiler working and can run some 64 bit tests
on an Opteron. Unfortunately, I can't find a 64 graphics card driver yet
(Trident 3D Blade), so the nps varies quite a bit between console mode and
Winboard analyze mode, since the console window scrolls very slowly under the
generic VGA driver with the Windows Server 2003 64 bit beta release.
Incidentally, Tinker is a bitboard engine (but not rotated BBs).
           NPS NPS
         Console Winboard
Opteron 64 404 537 (244 1.8 GHz)
Opteron 32 368 423
PentiumM 353 386 (1.6GHz laptop)
Athlon 289 322 (1900+, 1.6 GHz)

So, the console speedup is only about 10%, but under Winboard it is more
like 25%. I have also noticed that the nps steadily increases (in all cases)
about 10% as the engine runs for the first minute or two (I suspect due to
caching), and then levels off. The cache effect seems more pronounced on the
Pentium M and the Opteron than the Athlon.
