Andrew This has been (very successfully!) done for Othello. Please see the Logistelle home page at http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~mburo/log.html Logistello is (was?) the world's best Othello program. Its evaluation function parameters are determined by linear regression using a large number of high quality games (about 120000).
