It's a mate in 6 so it requires 12 plies (qsearch will detect the mate).
The right move is found a ply 6 and the mate at ply 8, so every move almost gets
extended to the max one ply.

I have a different way of doing threat detections, it might interfere with this
extension somehow.

Yes I guess Tord does not believe that the best defense is an offense :)

One thing to consider is that playing defense usually means handing over the
initiative so the game will be prolonged, I think there is a risk factor in that
somewhere.
