I have to agree with you here. If you look at some old logfiles that are still drifting around at the internet, it is easy to see that DB didn't look much further ahead than approx. 12 ply brute force. I also expect that the DB evaluation function was not much better than the evaluation function of the average amateur engine today. Programs like DF8 or SH8 are way better than DB was in the past.
