I assume you mean over the net. I find the best wat to do this is using either a
program called blitz, you can get that from ICC. Or the other program is
Winboard, and then you just log onto either FICS or another server, get your
friends guest name of login name then just send a challenge to him when you both
are on their. Blitz program cannot use FICS you will need winboard for that.

I play against my friend using Blitz, I find the ICC blitz program to have the
best chess interface. So you can either get an account and know the unique name
of that person everytime you enter ICC or use another communication program like
ICQ to both go in their and then you can get the other person to give you their
guest number or login name through ICQ then you can just challenge them to a
match.

Or you can find them through the chat engine in these programs. Yell out a
general "Paul .C are you there" or whoever are you there, and they will find
you.
