Some possible reasons: FICS like servers don't support (to my knowledge) conventional time controls (40 moves in so much time, then ...). Another reason, not all programs have an automatic connection to FICS like servers (some commercial engines can connect to another server type). Some programs have no automatic access to any server (perhaps?) IIRC, for example Isichess (which also did not participate at last CCT, but for example in Paderborn and Leiden this year). I attended 3 computer chess tournaments in person (all in Paderborn). I can assure you, that it was great fun. Watching CCT is also fun, but it is not comparable. Perhaps operating manually does add some excitation - but I am not sure. The opponents in PB did not seem to mind the manual operation. I am not sure, if or if not they would have prefered atuomatic games (if possible). This year in PB the time control was 40 moves in 1 1/2 hours, 1 h for the remainder. The years before it was 40 moves 2 h + 1 h. I guess, it would be also be more difficult to have CCT with that many participants it thankfully has, with such a longer time control. Regards, Dieter
