Hrm I've never had a problem with FICS. Maybe too many stored games? not sure.. You shouldnt have to write a program to interface. You can use xboard with zippy code included, or icsdrone which is a cli app both are free and work on nearly any OS. >>Which is why I personally think its worth it to pay 50$ a year for ICC.
