For the interpolation between middle game and endgame, I don't scale black
and white independently.  Only the total non-pawn material on the board
matters.  In practise I don't think it is very important to scale black and
white independently when you use a continuous scale between the middle game
and the endgame.  Most often, black and white will have exactly the same
material, and when one side does have a substantial advantage in piece
material, the position will be clearly won in 99% of the cases.

For scaling king safety values, I do scale black and white independently.

I'll answer even if you don't ask.  :-)

There are only two game phases in Gothmog (middlegame and endgame), hence
only a single interpolation.
