IBM promised printouts both before--and several times during--the match, then refused to deliver them. You don't have to be Kasparov to guess that IBM must have been hiding something. And don't forget--there were three American GM's on the IBM team, all under contract not to divulge whatever they were doing on the IBM team. Besides, why wouldn't they be looking for a measure of revenge against a man who said he could give a successful simul against the entire US team? I don't believe for one minute that the match was on the up-and-up, nor do I see any evidence that the 1997 version of Deep Blue was so much stronger than the 1996 version that it could beat Kasparov in an honest match.
