Fruit would be a good choice. I think you are looking for the wrong thing,
though. The 0x88 technique is really simple, and you will learn everything
you need by studying some simple and weak engine or by reading a description
of the board representation with a few small chunks of pseudo code. There
really isn't much more to say about 0x88 than what you will find in basic
tutorials. You won't learn anything more about 0x88 by studying Fruit or
some other strong engine, you will just learn the same things a bit slower.

On the other hand, Fruit is an excellent source for learning about how to
implement more high-level techniques, which are usually independent of your
board representation.
