I plan on getting the HIARCS 7 program in a week or two. Based on my
experience with the HIARCS 6 verison, I do believe it is worth the price.
Fortunately I am entitled to the upgrade price.

     It is important to have more than one computer engine in your collection;
preferably programs with different playing styles. The introduction of Fritz
5.32 allows me to do my own engine comparisons. Keep in mind I am not using
tournament time controls but this is what I have noticed. HIARCS plays a better
endgame than Fritz or Junior. It is also more modest in its evaluation of a
position. Since HIARCS is more of a positional program than the other two, it
is more incline to sacrifice.

My chess software collection includes ChessBass 7, Fritz 5.32, HIARCS 6
(both the DOS version and the engine modual for Fritz), Junior 5.0, and all the
free engines that came with them (Comet, Crafty and ExChesss, these engines are
not worth your playing time). In my opinion, I do believe the DOS version to be
stronger than the modual for Fritz. However, for the ease of use, playing under
the Fritz shell is better. As far as favorites go, I must confess, I am partial
to HIARCS. I also recommend Junior. Fritz 5.32 you can't beat its upgrade
price, also it is loaded with features. For example it is able to import EPD
files. What this means to me, I can now transfer the EPD files that came with
the HIARCS CD (these are similar to the Nunn test positions) and other programs
such as ChessMaster and BookUp.
