X11 is the display. Please NEVER shut down X11 once it is running. Just let it sit there in the background. You can close the xterm that X11 pops up, but do not quit X11 itself. So: step 1: Start X11 step 2: Start Terminal step 3 (in Terminal): export DISPLAY=:0.0 step 4 (in Terminal): scid It should work. Then please type ls -l .profile and let us know what you get back
