Thank you very much for allowing me to "feel free to add my comments" although
I am not Bob Hyatt -- I did not know that such generosity still existed here.
(Sorry for the sarcasm, yet I simply could not resist it when reading the title
of your message.)

The topic of your post is one of the oldest and most controversial questions in
computer chess. Many researchers have written about it but, unfortunately, most
of the published results are not statistically significant. Please down-load a
preprint of my article "DarkThought Goes Deep" as published in the ICCA Journal
21(4) by anonymous FTP from <ftp://i41s10.ira.uka.de/pub/ernst/dt_deep.ps.gz>
which contains an overview of previous work related to this subject in the
first three sections.
