I have an offshoot idea from your original question, but in a different direction. It would be nice to have: 1. A standard Opening book format (just as Winboard gives us a standard command sequence API). This format could be published and described in detail. 2. A standard Opening book inquiry API. 3. Both of the above combined (preferred). Even with commercial programs, they could support option 2, and then we could use commercial database products as opening books, just as commercial products now use freely available chess engines by relying on a standard API.
