I have implemented this into Phalanx XX too.  I was inspired by Crafty :-).
I give penalty to knight rather than bonus to bishop and do so in all
endgames, not just B vs N.  It is weak knight (that cannot  play on both
sides of the board), all other pieces are strong against the N in endgames
with pawns on both sides of the board.  I also add function of file distance
between leftmost and righmost pawn to the penalty.
