I think evaluating an engine is fine by not using the book, but.... I think to get a good idea of the engine you must get at least a little bit into what is considered an opening. Perhaps an opening book that takes you about 10 moves into an opening with an even game. If an opening book is the sign of a great engine, then buy a cheaper program and install the more powerful opening book. I do think if you're talking about a program as opposed to an engine, then you want as much as you can get in your program. While a Hiarcs engine may be more powerful than a Fritz engine, I think the Fritz program leaves Hiarcs way behind.
