Ed,

And please forgive me as I am not an engine programmer  but to answer your two
questions:

1) You would have to compile an executable that will run on Linux as the Windows
executable will not.

2) I am not familiar with all the winboard engines but Crafty, Yace, Phalanx,
and Faile have either a Linux/UNIX executable available for download or the
source plus a make file to compile on Linux/UNIX.

I hope I have answered your questions.  Many of the other posters to this thread
could give you much more technical information than I can.
