The simple fix to this is of course to run a loop anyway when you don't have
anything to ponder, preferrably causing a lot of random memory traffic and
thrashing the cache. Just use up your 50% of the CPU cycles to deny the opponent
any available resources.

Single CPU matches favor the least well behaved engine!
