Even though I've told part of this before I have to add my own memories. When I was studying I lived in a students home where one lucky person owned a Chess Chalenger. I don't remember the version, but this was in the beginning of the 80's and it had a nice wooden frame. A lot of the chess interested students would gather around this machine, play it, set up positions and so on. Of course the better players among us did't have any problem beating it. I remember my friend got it into a position where it would be mated if it hit a bishop. The machine didn't take the bait, but then my friend offered it a rook and the machine hit it gladly and was mated. Another fond memory with this machine is a funny position we set up because it had no check of legal positions. You could set up positions with f.ex. no king or several kings. I remeber we removed the king of the human player and when the machine got into the endgame it obviously got confused and started blinking. But the real screamer was when we converted all pawns to kings in the opening position, so that both sides had nine kings. We started playing and the game went somewhat like this: 1. Ked3 Ked6 2. Qf3# :) Those were the days Andreas Stabel
