You can be sure that a lot of chess programmers love chess.

Many chess programmers also play chess in tournaments(I am one of them and I am
not the best one inspite of the fact that I am better than most of the chess
players(my rating is near 2000 in the last year and I play a lot of blitz games
in the chessbase server(rating of almost 2000 there)).

Chess is the only game that I know to play better than most of the chess
players(statistics of the israeli players show that near 90% of the israeli
players who play in tournaments have rating that is less than 2000 and I guess
that the situation is similiar in the world) and it is a good reason to go for
chess programming and not for another game.
