Subject: PC Chess Software..Is There No Sense Of History ?

a question was posted yesterday by Eric Galulla who is a top French collector
of the old computers.

he asked about an old PC chess playing program "Socrates" and several answers
were posted .there seemed to be a bit of confusion,or lack of consistent
information in the postings.
it should be a cut and dry excercise to post basic information like this..
year of release
programer
manufacturer
approximate cost

this got me to thinking..

for the old computers.several sources exist that exactly chronicle the history
of the market
exact dates,manufacturer,elo,etc,etc are available
a Dutch collector has also attempted a month by month history of every unit to
hit the shelves

although there is no one book or magazine that exists where all of the history
can be easily culled, attempts were made at providing a detailed history

if you ask about a certain unit or program you can find and receive exact
unqualified information

does anything like this exist for the PC chess hobby?
lets for the moment forget the Mac or the early apple computers

for example..can someone please post here the first 5 PC programs available to
the public..
please give the name of the program, programer, date of release(year only ok)
manufacturer and approximate cost to the public

just looking up the first five PC chess programs that appear on the SSDF list
will not provide an accurate history
the SSDF did not test every possible dedicated unit and indeed many units do not
appear on its lists
i am sure this would be true for PC programs as well

an uninformed observer looking only at the SSDF list today would not even know
the Cmaster program exists(and is the best selling and most popular of all the
progs)

although PC programs are not my "cup of tea" i would find its history
interesting

Best
Steve
