Use of major portions of copyrighted material requires permission. I wrote to
Dr. Hyatt before requesting permission to modify Crafty to use the data I
generate in the C.A.P. project. My intention is that all Crafty source code
still retains Dr. Hyatt's copyright. The changes I make will (for the most
part) be generic and public domain (in other words, anyone who wants to uses the
code I write to include this data in their chess engines can do so freely
without any acknowlegement). The specific interface code between Crafty and the
code that I write is a grey area to me, but in any case it will be publicly
visible. I think that probably Dr. Hyatt should have ownership even of that
part.
