Playing against each other on Level A1, with easy mode switched off, the Eyeball generally plays quicker than the Phantom and throws in the odd blunder. In four games the Eyeball was soundly thrashed before the late middlegame each time. It looks to me that at least A1, and possibly other levels, were deliberately weakened on the Chesster Eyeball. This may have been appropriate with the coaching/entertainment features of the Chesster and a wider spread of strength levels was increasingly a feature of chess computers in the 1990s. Perhaps my Phantom is one of the earlier ones, and the Eyeball was produced years later? The Phantom has the gold/black/red colour scheme, the Eyeball the white/black/green colour scheme. Is this significant? All the best Mike
