It is, but why not simply add the appropriate line to your .Xdefaults file? I would prefer to disable the graphical board entirely in engine vs engine matches. I almost never watch the board, and it is very annoying that xboard always pops up on top of the desktop when launched (I usually run xboard from scripts when running matches, looping through a list of opponents and initial positions).
