Go up one level in this thread

When we voted on this at the WCCC 2002 tournament, we decided there
was no need for WMCCC and WCCCC. The discussion came up under the concept
of what is a micro-computer since Hydra could fit in a PC.

After breifly reviewing the history of WCCC, we saw that platform is
somewhat irrelevant. Over a decade ago, Shredder's hardware was damaged
in transit. The TD's gave it a spare pentium 90Mhz machine (single
processor). Shredder went on to win the competition beating both Deep Blue
and a 1024 processor supercomputer. Diep has used many processors and
failed to win the tournament but does perform well.

As the history of WCCC reveals, massive hardware doesn't guarantee a win.

Also, now one can easily get a dual proc machine. In a couple of years,
dual core technology will allow one to easily get a quad or better
    processor machine.

Hydra is calculating 40 Mnps. That isn't that much when one realizes that
Crafty can handle 4 Mnps on some not so exotic hardware. If one could get
Crafty up to 8 Mnps, then Hydra would be only 5 times faster. This means
it will get only 1 to 2 ply deeper. Combine this with the ongoing theory
that after 14 ply (achievable by Crafty), 1 more ply is not worth nearly
as much as an extra ply when search 9 or 10 ply deep.

I beleive that a professional and amateur title is about all that is
     needed.
