Sure it's possible. Here are a couple examples:

(1) sharpchess :

(2) sharpchess2 :

(3) silke chess :

http://www.silkesoft.com/html/chess/chess.aspx

The first 2 are winboard engines, the third is UCI. The second also is open
source.
