I think that 255 is the most logical size.

Nobody has ever beat 218 by contrived effort to create a wild position for move
choices.

255 can be stored in an unsigned char.

If anyone ever produces 256+, then we may have to change our thinking.

I am guessing that it cannot be done.  But it is a wild guess.
