Bruce's laconic reply was sufficient. But, allow me to remind you of some amateur programs that did not participate -- randomly and off-the-cuff: Ferret, Chess Wizard, Voyager, Stobor, XXXX-II, Anmon, Capture, SOS... Just for starters. I truly apologise to the authors whose programs I did not mention! But I purposefully did not wish to spend more than 10 seconds on the list of amateur programs reminding both you and myself about how many of them are actually out there. On top of this, 72 games is not enough to be decisive. Do not forget Patzer, Francesca, Comet and Gromit. Are you sure sure that these are weaker than Crafty at tournament levels? For one, Gromit vers. 2.11 (the drastically improved version) played only about half of the games, the buggy version played the rest... Lots of questions here. Not easy to give a definite answer. N.B. Crafty IS an excellent program though. I like it and respect its strength and its author. Regards, Djordje
