I think that you underestimate him.
Here is the fide rating list

7  Adams, Michael  g  ENG  2737  25  1971-11-17

Kasparov does not play now and the difference between Adams and Anand is only 48
elo.

48 elo is probably less then the possible error in rating because of luck so
Adams may be the strongest player of today.
