I think generally you find three major motivations in computer chess:

1) sporting/competitive - to compete in a field with a clear-cut measuring stick
& make the strongest (or realistically n-th strongest) program

2) scientific - to test various algorithms and come to hopefully generalizable
conclusions about their value

3) artistic - to sketch a program as a working collection of appropriate parts,
to implement in a consistent and (for lack of a better word) pleasing manner

Personally I'm probably closest to #3 but as with everyone else all of the
components are involved.

In fact - anybody who really likes to develop software (as opposed to using it
as a means to an end) is probably heavily motivated by #3.
