The other common lines (Winawer, Tarrasch, Classical, Exchange) mostly lead to open games, often with unbalanced and complex tactical play. I think the Ruy is a better choice than the French. The Caro Kann might be a good choice in that it might lead to simpler positions, but it certainly doesn't offer Black a closed game. -Peter
