Another possible temporary work-around (with an _extremely_ high cheese factor) would be to duplicate the search engine- offering one link for the beginning of the archive -> 2000, and the other for 2001 -> present. That's definitely not a long-term solution, but at least the more recent messages would be available until the engine were fixed or replaced.
