It is the fixed idea to show solidarity outside ChessBase and certainly the hope to establish a second Empire. And it didn't come through cold analytical researches but simply mutual sympathy from direct meetings in tournaments like the last in Reykjavik. All too normal. - But then your aspect with LIST is the ugly side of such alliances. If our own strength is not making it then we must seek for possible scandals in neighbor engines. So - if your claim is right - they spoiled the big success for Reul during his examinations when he was incapable to react without hurting his own academic perspectives. I can't forget the whole scandal. Also because the other officials (at least one academic) should have known better than banning LIST for the last three rounds! - I fear I'm the only one who tried to analyse the background of the ChessBase monopolism. And that it doesn't base on develish manipulations but simply attractive inventions in their products. Not seeing it caused much frustration and the actual misbehavior is just another example. As if it were sort of political struggle about power when in reality it's about the attraction of some really beautiful features which we all wanted to enjoy in chess. You are correct that with loudmouth declarations that attraction will be missed by miles and miles. And there is another aspect. To beat ChessBase you must have NEW features that would really be expected by normal chessplayers. THAT would be the only chance. But a slightly similar "copy" or "free copies" can't beat it because then the past history will make the important point. Why risking whole databases with unknown instruments when it works all fine with ChessBase. The simple win, not that it might be simple at all, at WCCCs alone can't substantiate the foundation of new companies or the change of habits in the customers. - But what do I write? It's all well-known. It's almost trivial. Perhaps our messages could stop hopeless attempts. I hope that you agree that such a debate would be impossible in the boring German forum, at least since Friedel left it.
