Subject: Moderation.... The deletion of a recent post.

There is a discussion further down on the board with reference to a
post that was recently deleted. Graham announced the deletion of the
thread, and there was some follow-up discussion as to whether the
decision was warranted and what the motives for doing so might have
been.

I would like to clear up what led to the decision so there is no
misunderstanding.

The post in question was from George Speight, a CCC member for a
relatively short time. It spoke about how he was a friend of Chryl
Maddox of Chessbase USA and how the Fritz 9 being sold by them
was different from the one being sold through mass merchants. It
also said that members of the CCC forum could get the program
when it was released at the end of October for the discounted price
of $45 if they called Chryl directly or mentioned George's name when calling.
It included a toll-free phone number to accomplish that.

Since ICD, and perhaps a few dozen other companies, sell (or in this
case, will sell) the EXACT Fritz 9 as Chessbase USA, it seemed to
me that it was unfair that such a commercial post should be allowed,
and I asked the moderators if it would be considered against the charter.

The reason to delete the post should not be that ICD is hosting the
CCC; therefore, members should buy from ICD. The reason should be that
the post was clearly a "flagrant commercial exhortation" which is
forbidden in the charter. That levels the playing field for everyone.

Back when the CCC was created (8 years ago as of last Friday), the Founders
wanted to keep the forum commercial free, and ICD has honored that decision
for all of these years by not posting any of its own "commercials". I would
expect that the moderators will make sure that others honor that commitment
as well.
