Subject: Collectors Corner: Mephisto Lyon 68000 v. Novag Star Diamond

As always, when you've bought something new you like to check it out and see if
you got what was advertised as well as just to make sure everything is working
properly. So, late as I always am, when I finally ordered a Novag Star Diamond I
set about playing some games. Here is one of a number; I wish I could repel the
Lyon as does the Star Diamond below.

Mephisto Lyon 68000 (2002) - Novag Star Diamond (2027) [A29]
G60, 10.08.2005

1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3

The English, Four Knights, Kingside Fianchetto, ECO A29. First recorded played
in Hencko vs Konkolsky, 1-0 1870 with GM Wolfgang Uhlmann being one of the most
common proponents of the White pieces. Seems to be a very solid opening for
White in general and quite playable for Black as well. I smell a 250-move draw
in the air already.

Last book move - I must admit I don't like this line simply because the White
Knight has already moved 5 times in the first 11 moves of the game. This is the
type of inefficient handling that loses correspondence games.

Finally! After some moves that started to make me wonder if their was a
conspiracy to draw in the works, the gloves come off.

44.Ke2 Rxc4 45.Kd3 Rc1 46.Ke4 Rd1 47.Ke5 f6+ 48.Ke4 Kf7

I consider the Lyon to be the better endgame player of the two but in this
position he allows the rooks to come off. I think I heard him beeping something
about tired registers...

What does that "k" in front of "NPS" mean Regards,

Chuck
