I have to take issue with this. I am a mere 2200, and my record against the
stronger computers on ICC is rather dismal. Nevertheless, every now and then I
do win, and have beaten computers with ICC ratings in the 2700s, mostly Crafty
clones. At home, I have wins in both blitz and slower time controls against
Fritz 5.16, CM6000, Rebel 10, MCP7, and various freeware programs, although
again my overall record is resoundingly negative. Am I to be automatically
suspected of cheating every time I score? Your opponent's play may well have
been duplicated by Fritz, as Mr. Soares claims, but my first reaction was that
it looked like a typical positional crush of a computer, by a player who managed
to avoid blunders for one game.

Assuming that this is true, that must be a much better indication. I'm neither
arguing with nor confirming your conclusion. What bothers me is that the mere
fact of an amateur player beating a computer seems to be taken as strong
evidence of cheating by some people. If you start evaluating the evidence with
that bias already in place, then your reasoning from that point on may be
biased. The fact is that amateurs do beat computers, legitimately, and in order
to do so they must avoid short term tactical errors for one game at least.

Best Wishes,

Marc
