There are different sorts of updates a software company might make. One sort of
release is a patch used to fix problems in the program. If the problems in the
program render it unfit for use, then (IMO) the sofware company is morally and
legally obligated to release this for no charge.

On the other hand, product enhancements and improvements are upgrades and a
software company has every right to charge for such updates. Usually, the price
for such things is whatever the market will bear and this is fair.

The only reason I have not purchased a copy of Fritz and Junior is that they
cannot currently be used for EPD processing. Even if that capability never
comes about I will probably buy one of each anyway.

Chess software is remarkably low in price. At the small volumes distributed, I
cannot imagine how they can be so successful. I think that we should be very
grateful to have such an incredible smorgasboard of delicious entrees at such
reasonable prices.

But things may be different in other countries. Perhaps the products cost a lot
more in different lands.
