It didn't. There has been an extremely high rate of progress in the general level of amateur computer chess since at least five years, while the old top professional programs haven't developed much. That the best of the (former) amateurs now catch up with the old commercial programs shouldn't surprise anybody who has followed the amateur computer chess scene. It is the natural and expected continuation of a development we have witnessed for years already. The reason why a lot of people here think this has happened so suddenly is probably just that this forum has never been very focused on the amateur programs. The amateur computer chess enthusiasts tend to hang out on the Winboard Forum instead. Tord
