This was on a PowerMac?  A 50% speedup is quite impressive.  I just
repeated your experiment with Crafty 20.1 on a first generation
iMac G5 1.8 GHz, using the compiler options given in your post.
Here are the results:

The 64 bit executable is only about 16% faster.
