There is one quite useful book published by Batsford called the Computer Chess Compendium, it has a lot of the (older) major papers on writing chess programs. could be considered dated (?) and lacks the finer details but is a good starting point. Also has fascinating accounts of the writing of Cray Blitz, Belle and so on and the seminal writings of Shannon and Turing who got everyone going. Ian Kennedy
