Subject: IPCCC report from the loser's side + some missing games

Author: Gerd Isenberg

Date: 12:17:03 12/30/05

Hi all,

during the last round at some time some were afraid that six programs tied first
with 4.5/7 - which would be the case if Ikarus managed to win. But somehow Rybka
turned the table and became the deserved winner of the 15.IPCCC2005(B).

So first of all congrats to Vasik and his amazing Rybka!
Ernst Walet was a very encouraged and experienced operator.
Busy while reporting his games - he didn't miss a minute in total i guess.

IsiChess scored 1.5/7 and 11th of 12 place - unfortunately as expected.

While i had a short but heavy stomach flu on xmas, i thought on withdrawing one
day before the start of the tournament. Is it responsible to take the risk to
infect other participants only to play with my outdated program? While i felt
better tuesday morning - i thought it is ok to go and to don't shake any hands
and to keep some distance - there was a pandemic in the area anyway.

Now i think it was irresponsible - we touched same pieces.
Since the stomach influenca had an incubation period of aprox. 1 1/2 days -
based on "empirical" data of my family - and today all other participant were ok
- i think it was only some good luck that nobody got infected by me.

The tournament was held in the Heinz Nixdorf Museums Forum where also the 99
wccc took place - a very good location for a computer chess tournament with nice
ambience. The Schachtürken-Cup, a human chess-tournament was held parallel in
the museum as well - so a lot of spectators, specially between the "human"
rounds were kibitzing. http://wwwcs.uni-paderborn.de/~IPCCC/

Despite Ulf Lorenz's future at the Paderborn University, it seems he found
succesors to organize it further. It is planned to regulary schedule it end of
december in HNM in conjunction with Schachtürken-Cup. Ulf made the appeal that
"we", the authors of chessprograms, are necessary to make the event successful.

In these thrilling computer chess times i would also like to engage authors of
"weaker" engines to participate in upcoming IPCCCs. Beside the social event
during the games and the evenings there are a lot of talks and discussions -
there is so much to learn and enjoy. And with Jochen and me there are also some
old fashioned sparring partners left, almost not that hard to beat ;-)

Of course - Hydra, Fritz and other commercials are welcome as well.
I think the number of participants is not that limited any longer.

IsiChess games - including some missed, probably lost on Ulf's memory-stick -
sorry for that. A few comments and one position so far.

In round one Fruit became in time trouble without making progress and we agreed
a draw. Fruit with +3.9 score (IsiChess -2.9 only!) had only one minute left on
the external clock.

In round 3 IsiChess was badly surprised by a kind of scotch gambit against the
very new bitboard Delphi-Program of Ralf Doer.

The most boring and chanceless game occurd in round 6 against Jonny.

Today, in round 7 IsiChess choosed to play najdorf againts Shredder.
Due to the wether forecast i liked to finish early to come home before
a snow-storm eventually arise from west ;-)

IsiChess was out of book after 11.Re1, Shredder after 15... b3.
A few move laters 18... Qc5 was expected by Shredder with a draw(ish) score.
But Isi missed to give more resistance.

Cheers,
Gerd
