It's changed over the years from being using part of the same code, say
high double-digits, on down to much lower.

For purposes of copyright and patented algorithms in software, it can become
quite strict.

Stallman used to interview me regarding GNU software changes from questions
his attorney posed to him, and it became very strict indeed for algorithms.

Things have become less free over the years. To clone a chess program for
one's enjoyment and fun is one thing. To clone it for profit without the
author's permission and a good contract between the two of you could be
difficult for the cloner.

I do not know the law in these areas and have better ways to enjoy my
time though I am not disinterested in it.
