I think engines that have an incremental move generating approach tend to order moves using MVV/LVA or, after trying the hash table move, generate all the captures and order using SEE leaving the -ve scoring moves until last after other non-capturing moves. IMO incremental move generation is something that should only be tried in mature engines for precisely this reason. The speed improvement of incremental move generation is probably only about +10% i.e. < 10 ELO point and in the same ballpark as the variation in the speed of execution produced by different compilers.
