I just did a quick search in DejaNews and rec.games.bridge and found much more about the bet. I said six million, but the challenge actually is for one million dollars. The player's name, from Pakistan, is Zia Mahmood. After reading some posts, I noticed that a program called "Gib" accepted the challenge and played two matches against this guy's human team for one million dollars but lost both matches. "Gib's" web site is at http://www.gibware.com/ Apparently it is a controversial topic. Some people in rec.games.bridge were saying that Zia would lose the bet within an year or so and others were disagreeing. Just do a power search in Deja News archive for "Zia bet" (without the quotes) in rec.games.bridge. Looks something similar to all the controversy we had about chess and computers:-)
